Purpose
Chronic pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide and is associated with significant healthcare costs. The inability to correlate the extent of tissue damage with the magnitude of pain, disability, and associated symptoms represents a diagnostic challenge for health professionals. Some studies reveal that chronic pain has a global prevalence of over 30%, resulting in substantial personal and financial hardships. Chronic pain should be viewed as a disease, unlike acute pain which is just one component of various symptoms.
Recent literature reveals that chronic pain is not always a result of ongoing injury, and contradicts the notion that all activity should be suspended. In contrast, chronic pain is seen as a consequence of abnormal neural signaling, which requires a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach that addresses biological, social, and psychological aspects. Given the complexity of chronic pain, treatment approaches based solely on medication usually fail. Conversely, the interdisciplinary method, combining physiotherapy and psychology, emerges as a viable and promising treatment option.
In this specific workshop, our main focus will be chronic pain, the updated classifications, and therapeutic directions. After all, the main leader of this workshop, Ms. Eleni Kapreli, PhD, has an extensive clinical and research interest in the mechanisms of development of dysfunction in patients with chronic neuromusculoskeletal disorders, so it is considered an incredibly unique opportunity for an update on chronic pain, its treatment management and much more.
